Grooming, Nail Trims, Wing & Beak Trims

Routine Veterinary Care by Boot Road Veterinarian Clinic

  • Coat Grooming - As far as grooming goes, we do not provide coat grooming for dogs.  The only coat work we offer is trimming mats out, particularly in rabbits.
  • Nail, Wing, and Beak Trims -We do provide nail trims for most species. We also provide wing trims and nail trims for birds as well as nail trims for other exotic animals such as rabbits and other small mammals.  Bird wing trims are specific to the species and age of the bird.  Different amounts of flight feathers are trimmed according to the type and flying ability of each individual bird.  Wer also provide beak trims for birds when necessary.
  • Safe Trimming Experiences - We provide these trims without sedation for animals who are able to tolerate them.  If the animal is unable to handle trimming without causing harm to itself or to Dr. Bob, sedation will be suggested.

Restraint for Saftey Reasons

All dogs and cats, regardless of their temperment, will have a bite barrier placed (either a breathable muzzle or e-collar) if they are receiving a potentially irritating procedure such as a blood draw or vaccination.  This is for insurance reasons.  If Dr. Bob is working on your pet, and you get bitten while he is handling it, he is liable for your injuries.  We also don't want anyone to get hurt accidentally.  Animals do not know we are trying to help them.

Preventative Care

  • Heartworm and Disease Testing - As part of our preventative care routine, we provide heartworm testing as well as tickborne disease testing (for diseases such as Lyme) that unfortunately affect our pets, particularly in the mid-Atlantic area.
  • Flea and Tick Treatment - We also counsel you on proper flea and tick treatment and help you come up a plan.  The type of flea and tick treatment that's best for you and your pet may vary based on your pet's lifestyle.

Anesthesia and Sedation

Routine Veterinary Care by Boot Road Veterinarian Clinic

  • Anesthesia - There are times during the healthcare of a pet that anesthesia and/or sedation is necessary.  We take thse procedures very seriously.  We will provide careful and close monitoring of your pet during the induction, maintenance, and recovery from anesthesia.  All pets are monitored during their recovery and kept warm during and after anesthesia.  Small creatures like exotic animals, kittens, and puppies recover in our intensive care unit in an incubator.

Before most anesthesia procedures are performed, preoperative testing like bloodwork is done to make sure your pet can safely handle the anesthesia and receovery process.

  • Sedation - For some animals, oral or injectable sedation is necessary to trim their nails.  Often dogs do not like having their nails trimmed.  We evaluate each animal on an individual basis and if needed, we will sedate the animl to make the procedure less stressful and less dangerous for them.  If an animal cannot tolerate a nail trim without sedation, but the pet owner does not agree, unfortunately we will not be able to move forward with the service.

Surgery

Routine Veterinary Care by Boot Road Veterinarian Clinic

Common surgeries performed in our vet clinic include mass removals, dental cleanings, spay and neuters, and wound closures.  If your pet needs a more in-depth procedure such as orthpedic fracture repair or intensive/complex soft tissue surgery, we will refer you to a local board-certified surgeon.

Euthanasia

An unfortunate part of pet ownership is letting go.  Euthanasia is often a painful but necessary decision to end a beloved animal's suffering. At Boot Road Veterinary Clinic, we provide caring and compassionate euthanasia services, which includes special scheduling for these situations at times when the office is not overly busy.  You can choose whether you would like to be with your pet through the whole process, some of the process of none of the process.

The euthanasia process involves givin the animal an injection to induce deep anesthesia so it gently falls asleep.  Then, an additional injection is given to turn off the brain.  Once your beloved pet has passed, you may choose to bury the animal yourself or choose cremation by a professional pet cemetary service and have the remains returned to you.  We can refer who to use should you choose cremation.

We are also connected with a group that provides in-home euthanasia services for families who prefer that option.
